What time and equipment do I need to do this course?

Here are all the things you will need to get the most out of this course.

TIME: There will be practice activities and readings between each session. Some of the activities will be essential for the next session so please be prepared to do a minimum of 2-3 hours of work between each session. You will need this time to do readings, do reflective exercises, practice your skills with others and generate questions for the next class. Of course, the more you can do between sessions, the more you will benefit from the course.

EXPERIENCE: Although it will obviously help if you have facilitated groups before, or if you know about how to use parts of the Prosocial approach like the Acceptance and Commitment Training Matrix, there are no pre-requisites for doing this course. We have found that those who already have relevant experience can make great contributions to the learning of those who are new to the field.

COMPUTING EQUIPMENT: You will need a video camera and set of headphones with a microphone for all sessions. Although many laptops have speakers and microphones built in, using the speaker invariably results in poor sound quality and feedback. So please make sure that you have headphones with a microphone. The small earbuds and microphone that come with a phone are usually fine, although obviously if you have a better quality headset that is good too.

ACCESS TO GROUPS: Each week, in addition to learning the key concepts and techniques, you will have a chance to apply the ideas to groups of your own. After week 2, you will need to have someone with whom you can run an individual matrix (if you have not already done so). And after week 4 of the course, we will invite you to run a group matrix with a group. For both exercises, you may be able to team up with people in the class to practice together. However, you may choose to work with a group of your own. Please note that this does NOT need to be a work group. It could be a family group, a sporting group or any group where you are confident you will be able to try out your skills without being judged too harshly.
